Frequently Asked Questions
What's the gold price today?
Gold prices change daily based on the international market, moving with global supply, demand, and economic conditions. We base our pricing on live rates from ABC Bullion, one of Australia's leading bullion dealers, so you can be confident you're getting a fair, market-accurate price on your gold, jewellery, coins, or bullion.
Because rates shift throughout the day, we don't publish a fixed number online — instead, visit us in-store or contact us at (03) 9546 7546 for today's live gold price and a free, no-obligation valuation.
How much is gold worth per gram?
Gold price per gram varies by purity (karat) and fluctuates with the daily market rate, so there's no single fixed number — 24K, 18K, 14K, and 9K gold all hold different values per gram based on their gold content. As Springvale's trusted gold buyer, we check your item's purity in-store using both a testing machine and acid testing, then calculate its value based on live market pricing at the time of your visit.
Because gold prices move throughout the day, the exact figure can only be confirmed in-store — this ensures you always get an accurate, fair valuation rather than an outdated online estimate. Visit our Springvale store for a free, no-obligation gold valuation today.
How is my gold evaluated for purity (karats)?
Most gold jewellery is stamped with a small hallmark indicating its purity (e.g. 9K, 14K, 18K, 24K), which gives us a starting point. From there, our team verifies the gold using two methods to make sure the reading is accurate and the gold is genuine:
Testing machine — a quick, non-destructive scan that measures the item's purity electronically
Acid testing — a small, targeted test applied to confirm the karat and rule out gold-plated or fake items
Using both methods together means we're not just relying on a stamp that could be worn, incorrect, or missing altogether — every item is properly verified before we calculate its value. This testing is done in-store, free of charge, while you wait.
What's the difference between selling and pawning?
Both start the same way — we evaluate your gold's purity and weight against the current market price. From there, the two options work differently:
Selling: You're paid on the spot when you accept our price, and the item is yours to let go of for good.
Pawning: Instead of selling, you borrow against your gold. We'll give you a loan offer on the spot, and if you accept, we securely store your item for the agreed loan period while you hold onto the cash. Repay the loan within that period and your gold is returned to you. Late repayments incur interest.
Which is right for you? If you don't need the item back, selling gets you the full value upfront. If it's something you want to keep long-term but need cash now, pawning lets you access funds without giving it up permanently.
Terms & Conditions Apply.
Do I need ID?
Yes — Valid photo ID is required for all gold buying and pawning transactions.
Why we ask for ID:
Preventing stolen property — transaction records help police trace stolen items and identify thieves, protecting genuine sellers and buyers alike
Legal compliance — as licensed second-hand dealers and pawnbrokers, we're required by law to record proof of identity for every transaction
Age verification — confirms you're legally an adult able to enter into a financial contract or loan
Your protection — a clear paper trail protects both the business and honest customers, ensuring every transaction is properly recorded
What's the price for 9K gold per gram today?
Gold purity refers to how much pure gold an item contains, measured in karats (K). Pure gold is 24K — the higher the karat, the more gold and the less alloy (other metals like silver or copper) it contains.
Common gold purities include:
24K — 99.9% pure gold (typically bullion and coins, too soft for everyday jewellery)
18K — 75% pure gold
14K — 58.5% pure gold
9K — 37.5% pure gold
Lower-karat gold is mixed with other metals to make it more durable for everyday wear, which is why most jewellery isn't 24K. Purity directly affects your item's value — the higher the karat, the more it's worth per gram. Our team tests every item's purity in-store, free of charge, using a testing machine and acid testing to confirm the exact karat before calculating its value.
